I am a freelance photographer and writer residing  in Vacaville, Solano County, in Northern California, specializing in  landscapes, seascapes and historic architecture.   I also do occasional portraits,  special event photography, and photojournalism.. From time to time,  Whenever the spirit dictates, I write op-ed columns and an occasional article concerning history and economics  for local and not so local  newspapers and journals.

 

Prior to my photographic and editorial  work, I served for twenty three  years with the United States Coast Guard (both Active Duty and Reserve) as a Radio Operator, Communications Supervisor  and Automated Systems Project Manager. I retired from the Coast Guard in 1993.

Writings

An Examination of the Possibility  of Implementation of a Parliamentary Form of Government For the United States of America  (1999) - in collaboration with Colby Franklin and Ryan Siemantel  - Compares the present form of government in the United States against  various forms of  parliamentary government and whether or not the United States should adopt this  form of government.  

 

The Influence of John Maynard Keynes on the Administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt  (1999) - Looks at how the thinking of the  British economist helped influence  the United States New Deal programs of the United States during  the Great Depression.

Dr. Werner Karl Heisenberg and the German Nuclear Program during the Second World War (2000) - Review and discussion of several academic articles arguing for and against successes and failures of Dr. Heisenberg's attempt at developing a nuclear weapon for Nazi Germany. 

The 1930 California Gubernatorial Election and the Sacramento Press Response (2000) - Examines two major Sacramento newspapers and their influence on the 1930 California gubernatorial election.

The Rancho del Paso Mexican Land Grant  (2001) - A historical study of a large parcel of land north of present day Sacramento, California from Spanish land grant status in the early 18th century with a diversity of owners such as General John A. Sutter to sub-division into dry farming land and ultimately developed into what was McClellan Air Force Base prior to the Second World War.

A Historical Assessment of McClellan Air Force Base (2001) -  in collaboration with Leona Roberts and Nichole Pruitt - Provides a public history  overview of McClellan Air Force Base from its conception during the Second World War to the base closure due to the 1995 session of the Base Realignment and Closure Commission. Heavy emphasis is placed on sources of environmental pollution for future cleanup projects.

An Oral History of Life on a German-American Farm in North Dakota and Immigration to California (2001) Interviews with a Woman  who grew up on a wheat farm near Fargo, North Dakota and followed her family as they sought employment in the defense industry during the Second World War.


Professional Experience

  • Freelance Photographer (2002 – present)  

    • Shoot and Print stock and fine art  photographs, specializing in Northern California locations.

    • Provide photojournalism services for the Solano County Library system and various church and civic organizations.

  • Private Information Technology Consultant (1993 – 2002)

    • Designed and implemented office automation projects for various small businesses and individuals in Shasta County, California, Lake County, California and Marin County, California.

  • United States Coast Guard (1970 - 1993)

    • Radio Operator providing national and international maritime emergency and safety services for ships and aircraft at sea using International Morse Code, Voice, and teletype services.

    • FAA and National Weather Service certified Aviation Surface Weather Observer.

    • Ship's Radio Operator on three Coast Guard ocean going vessels, Radioman-in-Charge on two of the ships.

    • Maritime Law Enforcement Boarding Officer.

    • Qualified Officer of the Deck on a Sea Going Buoy Tender, 180 feet in Length.

    • Communication Watch Officer supervising a watch section of 12 radio operators and technicians with area of responsibility for ocean waters from U.S./Mexican boundary to the U.S./Canada boundary and west to and including the island of Guam

    • Cryptographic Material Systems Custodian.

    • Naval Warfare Publications Librarian

    • Computer Network System Administrator.

    • Information Resources Management Staff. Project manager at a major Coast Guard telecommunications facility. Coordinated the conversion of analog based telecommunications systems to computer controlled digital systems. Designed and wrote a geographical pronunciation dictionary for the Voice Operated Broadcast Automated  system which simplified the pronunciation of Spanish language geographical names for Coast Guard automated voice marine information broadcasts.  Helped design, configure, and implement routers which extended the Internet to ships at sea.  Configured what was then, the world's largest wide area data network which consisted of ships as far north as the Bering Sea and as far south as Ice Breakers working off of McMurdo Station in Antarctica.

I received my basic training at  the Coast Guard Training and Supply Center, Alameda, California between June 22, 1970 to August 20, 1970. 

 

Afterward, I attended the Coast Guard Radioman School at Coast Guard Training Center at Governor's Island, New York. NY.

  • (1997-2000) Taught computer literacy and Internet skills at the Base Library, Travis Air Force Base, Fairfield, California.  

  • (1995 - 1997)  Computer Lab Volunteer Assistant at Terrace Middle School, Lakeport, California.  

  • (1993 - 1995)  Preparation and delivery of meals for Eastern Shasta County Seniors Meals-on-Wheels, Burney, Calif.

  •  (1989 - 1993)  Volunteer library assistant at the Point Reyes, California Branch of the Marin County Library.  

  • (1981 - 1983)  Volunteer librarian at Coast Guard Support Center, Kodiak, Alaska.
