McCall's Ranch School and Summer Camp was a private boarding school and summer camp formerly located in the eastern San Diego County town of Alpine.

McCall's Ranch was started in 1944 by Blanch and Carl McCall largely to care for children of military members and defense workers during the Second World War.
McCall's continued providing education to grates 1 through 8 until the middle 1970s.  I attended from the summer of 1959 to May 1965. If anyone remembers,
my nickname was "Woody".

I will be embedding photographs that I have taken during my time at McCall's Ranch when time permits. Most are black&white and need to be scanned.

In the meantime, I have scanned an old McCall's Ranch School & Summer Camp brochure. I had to divide it into four images and each may
take a moment or two to download. Printing in the early 1960s was not done with the Internet in mind.

Unfortunately, in 2008, there is very little left, if anything, to indicate where McCall's Ranch once stood. The hill, where on top, once stood the ranch house (see the picture above) has been subdivided into several "ranchettes" or, suburban estates.  The ranch house, class rooms and barn are no longer present.  In fact, many of the granite outcroppings where we used to climb are no longer seen on any of the aerial photos.  A year or so ago, we went through Alpine looking for where McCall's used to be located. The entire landscape is now unrecognizable.  We then paid a visit to the Alpine Chamber of Commerce and the manager there had never even heard of the school & boarding camp.

Carl McCall passed away in the late 1970s/early 1980s.  Blanch passed away in the early 1990s.

All good things must come to an end, I guess.  In the meantime, thanks to Google Maps, you can take a look at an aerial photo of the hill at the intersection of Tavern and South Grade Roads looks like now. The community is now known as "Alpine Heights.

If you will send me a recent photo of yourself (plus a photo of you as a student at McCall's Ranch), I'll add it to this gallery. Please let me know when you attended McCall's.
